WinMason measured

But how fast is WinMason really when it comes to a ground-up installation? In other words: how long is my work disruption in case of a malconfigured computer? Maybe you're used to ranges of hours or - shudder - days. But let us see how fast this can be.

The following values have been measured on an ordinary office computer: AMD K6-2, 233 MHz, 64 MB RAM, S3 Trio V2 Grafikkarte (PCI), Maxtor Hard Disk 6 GB. Really not a super-fast computer, but quite usable to write letters.

Time Action
0:00 I quit Windows into DOS mode. Then I type
cd \windows_cs
install 40
This starts the automatic Windows installation.
0:11 11 Seconds later and all remnants of the previous windows installation are history.
0:54 Windows just finished the Hard disk and the Hardware detection phase. Now the installation of Windows really begins
3:16 1st reboot
4:06 Now Windows detects additional PnP hardware and installs their drivers
4:43 2nd reboot
5:05 5 minutes after I started the installation it's the first time for me for manual intervention: I have to login myself into the network.
5:46 After the first Login WinMason has been started. WinMason in turn starts to install Windows Patches.
5:57 Alle Patches are installed. Now the installation of Office 97 starts. Or, to be more correct, only Word, Excel, Access as well as the glue code like ODBC etc.
8:21 Office 97 is insalled. Now the installations script continues with the Service Release 2. (see the picture)
9:18 Now we install misc patches to Office, like the Forms Update, the UID privacy patch and, of course, the new spell checker for the changed german writing rules
9:50 The installation has finished! (see this picture)

Adaptions

As already mentioned: that was not just a basic installation of programs. We also applied all the local customizations. Here, for example, you can see which printers are already available:

Installed Printers

The customizations are going one step further. Here's an excerpt of Word for Windows as it was launched directly after the Install:

Word for Windows with special icons

Maybe you realize those 4 new icons in the upper left corner? Those are icons for the functions "New Blanko document", "New Letter", "New Fax" and "New Memo". This functions are not just loading the correct templates, they also make sure that the document prints out nicely on all printers, e.g. they set the right bin automatically ...

Additional Installations

Sometimes there are programs that you want to install afterwards. E.g. we haven't yet installed PowerPoint (almost no one needs that program). So there is a companion to WinMason that can install programs on a need-by-need basis: Launcher.
